Is This You?
18 x 12 in, Digital Illustration, 2020
Keeping with the idea of diptychs, this piece is a two panel comic depicting someone confirming their created character as a representation of themself. The lighting is purposefully narrowed in on the two figures in order to bring focus and create a sense of intimacy. Gender is not a choice, but choosing to live your truest self is, and it can be a difficult one that requires a large amount of self-reflection and self-acceptance.
When thinking about this piece I looked Matt Rhodes’ Tellurion series, where he creates illustrations with very easy to read narratives, as well as an older series of two panel comics from Kim-Seang Hong (Nesskain) that illustrated quiet moments between a couple abroad. I wanted to make sure the piece kept its sense of intimacy/closeness for the concept while being easily read narrative wise.
