Are you a boy? or a girl?
18 x 12 in, Digital Illustration, 2019

Rather than being a diptych like other pieces in this body of work, Are You a Boy? Or a Girl? instead illustrates two figures. The highlighted figure represents the desired presentation of an individual the artist knows, while the shadowed figure represents their current presentation. The figures aren’t wildly different from one another, but still possess subtle changes the individual wishes to make in order to be happy. The individual in real life is a trans-man that prefers a more gender neutral appearance leaning more towards masculine.

Traditionally in games like Pokemon (the inspiration for this layout and presented question), players are only given an option of male or female despite gender being a spectrum. In this piece the binary options have been removed and replaced with a sliding bar allowing a potential player to move the pin exactly where they please. In a game, this would allow the selection of a more accurate identity (possibly even picking he/they/she pronouns based on placement) while also selecting a starting point for character customization.
