This diptych is the exterior and interior art for a game case. The exterior of the case depicts an individual prior to transition in a similar solemn expression as other diptychs have in this series. They’re enveloped by a new moon behind them. When the moon is fully dark, with no illumination from the sun, it is symbolic of a quiet time - the time before something begins. it’s seen as a time of planning or preparing for your dreams. The exterior also is embellished with game case language easily recognizable to the gaming community.
The interior depicts a look into a fantasy world where the individual from the exterior exists as their ideal presentation. Just as the other diptychs in this series, this dichotomy represents an escape to a fantasy world, in which an ideal identity can be created that would not be acceptable in daily life. The interior figure is accompanied by a companion and a full moon. The companion is to simply represent the idea of community gaming can bring. The full moon represents completion, the height of power, the realization of your desires and the peak of clarity. It is a time to celebrate your growth, take note of what progress you have made and to reflect on how far you have come.
Why a game case?
Gaming is a huge part of this body of work, and within the gaming community there is rarely depiction of LGBTQIA+ individuals as part of promotional material. There is also rarely depiction of South East Asian individuals as part of promotional material. These were both pieces of feedback the artist received when asking LGBTQIA+ individuals about representation and experiences within gaming. Taking these groups of people and placing them within a space they exist but are commonly left out of takes inspiration from artist Kehinde Wiley and his depiction of modern day black men and women in the places of Old World nobility.
